Supply and Demand by Glen Wilson
Glen Wilson lives in Portadown, Co. Armagh with his wife Rhonda and children Sian and Cain. He has been published in Iota, A New Ulster and The Interpreters House. In 2014 he won the Poetry Space competition and was shortlisted for the Wasafiri New Writing Prize. He is currently working on his first collection of poetry. Will this one do? She said pointing at her.
Our eyes meet and both our heads lower.
Yes fine, I mean splendid, oh I don’t care.
She tries to shrink back like a flower.
and I am aware of it but I am torn
by that craving, that pull of a dark sense.
I watch her get dressed and take my money.
She smiles a used smile, I make a quick exit,
Hurrying down stairs past the moans of debris.
Even to these lamp lit streets I’ll never admit,
that I saw fear in another human being
and continued on with what I was doing.

Her brown curls frame her innocence
and I am aware of it but I am torn
by that craving, that pull of a dark sense.
In us a winged counterfeit is born.
I watch her get dressed and take my money.
She smiles a used smile, I make a quick exit,
Hurrying down stairs past the moans of debris.
Even to these lamp lit streets I’ll never admit,
that I saw fear in another human being
and continued on with what I was doing.
