Deniz Utlu

Deniz Utlu was born in Hannover in 1983. His published novels include Die Ungehaltenen [The Falling] (Graf, 2014), Gegen Morgen [Towards Morning] (Suhrkamp, 2019) and Vaters Meer (Suhrkamp, 2023), which will be published in English as My Father’s Sea in 2027, translated by Katy Derbyshire. His work has received numerous awards, including the Bavarian Book Prize, the Literatour Nord Literature Prize, the Alfred Döblin Prize, and the European Union Literature Prize (special mention), among others. Play adaptations of his work were produced in 2015 at the Maxim Gorki Theatre and in 2024 at the Schauspiel Hannover. Utlu has also published poetry and essays. He taught creative writing at the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig, the Institut für Sprachkunst in Vienna ,and at the UdK in Berlin. He edited the literature magazine freitext for ten years.
