Jeremy Tiang

Jeremy Tiang (he/they) is a novelist, playwright, and literary translator. He has translated over thirty books from across the Chinese-speaking world, including Zou Jingzhi’s Ninth Building, which was longlisted for the International Booker Prize.

Jeremy won the Obie Award for Outstanding New Play for Salesman之死, and the Singapore Literature Prize for his novel State of Emergency. He is the co-editor, with Dr Kavita Bhanot, of Violent Phenomena: 21 Essays on Translation. Originally from Singapore, he now lives in Flushing, Queens.

Loyalty to Language: A Conversation with Madeleine Thien
The prolific fiction writer Madeleine Thien speaks to Jeremy Tiang about her latest novel, The Book of Records, where a young girl takes refuge in a structure called the Sea — resembling the Kowloon Walled City if it were 'adrift in time and space'. There, her life melds with three characters analogous to Du Fu, Baruch Spinoza, and Hannah Arendt. The interview further explores Thien's earlier books, her relationships to her characters and stories, grief, and the impact of genocide – in both Cambodia and Palestine – on her thinking and practice.
