Writing Art

Curated by Wasafiri's Art Editor, Leon Wainwright, this bundle gathers some of the strongest art writing from our archive, ranging from criticism to interviews, reviews, analyses, and retrospectives on work by visual artists from across the globe.

Wasafiri 119: 40th Anniversary Issue — Futurisms features an essay by Alice Correia, covering work by three female artists of colour, Leslie Hakim-Dowek, Gurminder Sikand, and Nina Edge, who 'each engaged in particular types of thoughtful, practice-led decolonial feminism' during the 1980s and 1990s.

Sharanya's Art essay in Wasafiri 113, titled 'The Remains of the Day: Re-tracing Archival Art Through Dayanita Singh and Ali Kazim', explores 'the aesthetics of representing archives and archiving' through these two South Asian modern artists.

Wasafiri 107: Crisis/Recovery contains not one, but two Art essays. Adele Tan explores impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the National Gallery Singapore and the Singapore Art Museum in 'What the Centre Cannot Hold: Pandemic Vicissitudes and Contemporary Art in Singapore', while Kabe Wilson – an artist, experimental poet and archival scholar – discusses nuances of his own artistic practice in 'Reading the Past and the Present, Painting the Sea and the Sky'.

Finally, Nauman Khalid writes about Karachi-based multidisciplinary artist Naiza Khan's solo project representing Pakistan at the 2019 Venice Biennale, in 'Manora Field Notes' from Wasafiri 101
