Simone Khanyi Hadebe
Simone Khanyi Hadebe is Wasafiri's inaugural Illustrator in Residence. She is an interdisciplinary storyteller from Botswana and Zimbabwe. Raised by her grandparents in Bulawayo during the height of Zimbabwe's economic crisis, she draws upon Badia Ahad-Legardy's research in Afro-nostalgia to investigate the visceral act of remembrance.
Through animation, illustration, music, and sound, she unravels intergenerational stories of African communal childcare and migration — exploring what we hold onto and what feels painful to recall. Her practice is a form of healing for herself and her ancestors, addressing the longing for a home that feels increasingly distant.
